7.0% ABV - 75 IBU
I have seen the Coronado Brewing Co. (Coronado, CA) name around for a while, but this is the first time that I have had a chance to try one of their beers. I am generally a big fan of IPA's coming out of San Diego County. My preference is to the maltier side and I really like big time hop aroma. One thing I like to do is grab the first whiff of aroma out of the bottle right after I pop the cap. With their Islander IPA I wasn't immediately struck with hop aroma, even after pouring it into the glass. Upon tasting, it didn't really have the maltiness that I prefer. As a result, the 75 IBU's really seemed to come through. I also detected a bit of soapy flavor, but I try my hardest to avoid eating soap, so this might not be the most accurate analysis. Overall, I would probably pass on this one in the future, but I am pretty stubborn so I might give Coronado another try when I get a chance.
